Birthday Survival

So, I officially survived another year. I’m 31. Yikes!

Saturday, 7/11 was my 31st birthday and it was spent having the time of my life with my husband.

He surprised me with reservations to Disney’s Be Our Guest restaurant, one of the hardest venues to book out of all the dining options. It took him almost a month and a half of constant refreshing on the reservations page, but he did it.

The food was AMAZING, the decor was right out of the movie, and the child in me was on cloud nine for the duration of the evening.

While I did work out that morning, the last thing on my mind was diet — I enjoyed everything I wanted to, and I have no regrets. I spent my 31st birthday with the joy and wonder of a child, and the candy-consumption to match. It was glorious.

Now that the weekend is behind me, though, it’s time to resume my clean eating. I’m not going low-carb, but I am watching my sugars, aiming for high protein, and lots of healthy fats to compliment my veggies. Let’s hope 31 is my healthiest year yet!

A Weekend of Feasting!

This past weekend, my husband and I traveled to Greensboro, North Carolina to celebrate a friend’s wedding.

As you can probably imagine, a wedding is not the place to stick with a strict diet, so when we arrived on Friday morning, I told my husband I would enjoy the food and not worry about calories. And so we did.

I didn’t take pictures of everything (we ate a TON), but I tried to grab shots of some of the healthier choices I made throughout the trip. I’m pretty sure I ate my body weight in cake (both at the Rehearsal Dinner — ice cream cake! — and the wedding), but I’m not stressing it. I can get back on track this week and work it off.

Plus, we spent Saturday morning hiking (for almost three hours), which was both strenuous and ridiculously beautiful. So that had to burn off some of it, right? 🙂

Saturday Accountability: CHEAT DAY!

I have very little say other than:

It was my cheat day.
I went to an all-you-can-eat Argentinian steakhouse.
Margaritas.
Cheese.
Sangria.
Dulce de leche.
Picana steak.
Jumbo shrimp.
Cheese.
Potatoes.
Cheese.
More and more and more.
Did I mention there was a cheese bar?!

Back to normal tomorrow: under 1,350 calories, burning no less than 1,000 calories in exercise. Today was a fun rest/cheat day, but I’m already feeling the repercussions: stomach is KILLING me!

Time for some alka seltzer and a warm bath.

P.S. I should mention my weight was down to 129.8 this morning: a solid 6 lbs down from Monday. I figured I should document it here now, as today’s cheat meal will likely prevent me from seeing that number again for several days, if at all. :/

Well, they say you should carb-load, right …?

The day before a big race, what do YOU normally do?

Eat a few bananas? Stretch? Have a good, complex-carb rich dinner?

In my case …I go to Epcot with the family. Margaritas! Beer! Good food!

Probably not the best idea before a 7 mile, 25 obstacle foot race, but to each their own.

Wish me luck for tomorrow and let’s pray the Tequila doesn’t give me a hangover …

Halloween Treats

Oh man…

Here come all of the Halloween candies, snacks, and themed-treats to further sabotage my dieting attempts.

These are my major weaknesses of the season:

Why, oh why, does every holiday/season have to be associated with such delicious (and fattening) food?!

Ugh.

I’m going to make this smoothie tonight to try and combat my desire to hunt down pumpkin-spiced-everything after work tonight:

pumpkin

Pumpkin Pie Protein Smoothie:

  • 1 scoop Cinnamon Bun Protein Powder (120 cals, low carb)
  • 2/3 cup pure pumpkin puree
  • 1 cup So Delicious Almond Milk Plus Protein (40 cals, 5+ grams of protein
  • 1 tbsp chopped pecans
  • 1 tbsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 2 packets of Splenda/Truvia (whatever I have on hand)
  • 1/2 tbsp of pure vanilla extract
  • 1 full cup of ice

This’ll be a pretty big – and heavy – smoothie, weighing in at nearly 300 calories, but it’ll pack healthy fats and a lot of filling protein. My hope is that it’ll fill me up AND satisfy my sweets craving for the seasonal treats!

The Menu Tonight: Fish & Veggies!

As a joint effort with my husband, tonight we’re whipping up pan-fried tilapia, mashed cauliflower (using fat free, plain Greek yogurt, garlic, chives, and 2% cheese), and garlicky Brussels sprouts for dinner.

I got my Monday off to a bad start, snacking on three Hershey’s dark chocolate miniatures (135 calories) after lunch and three more (another 135, gah!) during a LOOOOONG meeting.

Fortunately, the rest of my day was very healthy (salad for lunch, non-fat yogurt for breakfast, and lots of fruit/veggies for snacks), so my hope is that tonight’s hardcore cardio workout will cancel out my little indulgences and let me go to bed feeling good about my day.

Also, a schedule change at my second job means I get to sleep an extra 90 mins every night — meaning I get closer to 4-4.5 hours versus my normal 2.5-3 — so that means my appetite should be better controlled as I catch up on my ZZZs.

I hope everyone had a great Monday!

Bon appetit,

Keeping Cheat Day Reasonable

Saturday is the unofficial cheat day in my household. It’s never officially talked about or agreed upon, but nothing is said if someone orders a burger instead of their usual grilled chicken salad.

After an 8.76 mile run on Saturday morning, I knew I wasn’t going to worry about what I ate for lunch: I deserved anything my little heart craved.

That being said, I decided to finally check out the little bar at the East End Market (in Orlando, Fl.). Located at the end of a row of artisanal restaurants and stores, you can order practically anything you’d like to eat to accompany the drink(s) of your choosing.

With a boulangerie behind me and a charcuterie to the right, I made a good decision:

Paired with a collection of Florida wine flights, really, I couldn’t go wrong:

A delicious, satisfying cheat meal – that really wasn’t a cheat, if I’m being honest – and a new experience supporting local small businesses. I would say it was a win/win Saturday!

I hope everyone enjoys their weekend!

Bon appetit, my friends!

Friday Accountability Report

We had a birthday in the office today so you know what that means: cookies, Publix cake, and snacks galore!

While I resisted the siren call of both the cookies and cake, I was sucked in by the sweet Chex Mix (such crunchy goodness) and a generous serving of Jif Mocha Cappuccino hazelnut spread (like Nutella, but even worse for you).

My dinner was healthy (but included bread – so not Paleo), but the post-dinner cupcake sort of sealed the deal on the calorie fiasco.

Fortunately, I did enough cardio today to cancel out, so let’s hope the damage isn’t too bad on the scale or the waist.
